About the Survey:

The “Community Assessment Survey” was developed in 2000 to complete assessment of the environment in local communities in terms of risk and protective factors. There are  many surveys available for assessment in the community. These are typically designed for use with student populations. The “Community Assessment Survey” is designed to assess the perception of adults in the community regarding the presence of risk and protective factors. This is compiled through a series of items that gather opinions and attitudes regarding the issues and challenges that confront the community. The survey also solicits response regarding the level of substance use as perceived by the adults in the community.
The survey items are based on constructs that link to bonding with the community, conditions that exists that may lead to heightened risk, and support that identifies protective factors in the community.  The survey has questions embedded in it that are associated with the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA). These items allow for responses related to adult use and prevalence of drugs and alcohol in the community. This data is not usually available in the community and the survey is a unique source for this information. The survey is designed to protect the privacy of the individuals taking the survey and subjects are given the opportunity to opt out on the questions if they so choose. The design of the survey allows for optimum collection of data from the sample selected.
The survey is currently being used in several counties in Texas, statewide in West Virginia, and in various locations in Mississippi..
